Who is responsible for solar energy development in Victoria?

Electricity generation in Victoria has traditionally been concentrated in the LaTrobe Valley, with large coal-fired power stations and some gas plants supplying the main load centre of Melbourne. Power has also been supplied by the Snowy hydro scheme in the north east, plus two wind farms on the southern coast.

Situated at the Mortlake Power Station, Victoria’s largest gas-fired generator with a generating capacity of 566MW, the BESS is located adjacent to the Moorabool to Heywood 500kv transmission line, enabling it to connect to the National Electricity Market (NEM).

How do I view solar energy facilities in Victoria?

Solar energy facilities in Victoria can be viewed on VicPlan: Select the ‘Map’ tab from the main toolbar and select 'Layer Catalogue'. Expand 'Wind & Solar Farms' and select maps by ticking the check-box alongside each layer, then select 'OK'. The selected layers appear on the map and are listed in the layer control panel to the left of the map.
