What is the difference between GFRP and steel tank containers?

The first configuration refers to a steel tank container, the second to a GFRP tank container assuming that it can fulfil the same requirements at a 20% lower tank mass, and the third a GFRP variant assuming 40% mass reduction. The numbers given in the table are values relative to the steel tank mass as explained in the previous section.

What determines the thickness of a cylinder shell?

In contrast, in the case of overpressure, the outwardly directed pressure determines the required roof thickness, which is almost five times as large at 120 mm. The strength in the circumferential direction is decisive for the wall thickness of the upper and center sections of the cylinder shell.

How thick should a GFRP tank be?

According to DIN EN 13121-2, the minimum thickness is 2.5 mm for a chemical resistance layer (CRL) and 2.4 mm for a TPL made of PVDF. These minimum thicknesses are used here in the design. The design of the GFRP tank is carried out using tabular characteristic values from the standard (see Table A1).

Which load cases are considered for the dimensioning of tanks?

The following mechanical load cases are considered for the dimensioning of tanks: 1) net weight of the tank; 2) weight of LOHC; 3) constant overpressure; 4) maximum possible (short-term) overpressure; 5) wind moment and pressure (except for thermoplastic tank); and 6) snow (except for thermoplastic tank).
